Melville nods and grimaces. "Exactly. It was odd to say the least. An electrical fire would have been noticed and put out immediately. What's more, the place had working smoke alarms, but none of them were triggered."

Pantages, her fingers still trailing through the dust, brushes something metal. "What's this?" She wonders aloud, ash swirling off it as she picks it up to inspect it.

Melville looks at it. "That looks like an old lighter. I wonder what it could be doing in here. Nobody was allowed to smoke backstage or in the sound booth, the management was worried about the smell."

Wondering if there was any more evidence that suggested that, Pantages felt around in the dust. A spider crawled over her hand, on its way to making another web. So far she just felt singed electrical cords, nothing special.

Melville's phone would ring at that moment. If picked up, Jackalline would be on the other side.
"Hey, it's been a little bit. How much have you found out? You guys are probably professionals at this so I imagine you've learned a good amount."

"Well, surely Mr. Castell couldn't have been this important. There would be no reason to not rebuild unless he was someone important, and if he was then what was he doing in a sound booth? Besides, there would have been a clean up in his honour, or at least a plaque." Malachi said reasonably.
"I would find it more likely someone with no small amount of power over the owners didn't wish for something to be found." He finished, hearing the ringing. "Say, what's that sound?"

Melville answers his phone. "Hello, Jackalline. We found a lighter in the sound booth, which leads me to think this fire may not have been accidental."
He turns back to Malachi. "The reason this theater was never rebuilt was not due to the dead, but the living. Namely, lawsuits from people who sustained injuries in the fire. The owners were given a choice, shut down the theater or go to court where they were sure to lose money. They chose to close their doors rather than be sued."

Melville looks thoughtful and runs a hand through the thin coating of ash on the sound equipment. He is imagining how the theater must have looked before it burned. Melville had been doing some work in Dubai when the fire happened, and he's only heard stories of the disaster.
You certainly seem to be a fan of your Narrator...

Malachi thoughtfully sits down near the stage, examining the dust and ash covering the seats. He tries to imagine his favorite plays being show on that stage and gains a mellow, sad look as he realizes how many people this theater must have brought joy to. On that day he decides something. If, no, when he gains the money and experience to rebuild it then the Pierce Street Theater will sound with the shouts of happy people again.
Why not? Malachi's got a strong and fun personality, and he's coming to life a bit more each post.

Pantages continues crouching down, looking for other out-of-place things. All she can find are wires and cobwebs. It feels almost wrong to her, examining this ghost theater. "Will this help the one dead rest in peace?" she whispers to herself, pausing in her investigation for a moment.

Melville closes his eyes and tries to picture the people who might have been affected by the horrible tragedy. Only one had died, but countless people had been severely injured and that would impact their lives and life choices a lot. Some people would never be the same again. He sighs and runs a hand through his hair. Just like me...
I like him too. He's definitely an interesting character.
