Welcome to the World of Dungeons and Dragons
Part 1: Kiptoke, What are You Doing?
Only being Dungeon Master for #kun's first Dungeons and Dragons game. I will be running with the starter kit rules and it's in-box campaign, Lost Mine of Phandelver. I am only running this as a test session to see how you all can handle an actual role playing game in a digital format.
Part 2: What is D&D, and how do you play it?
Dungeons and Dragons is what we super nerds call a role playing game. It is where you assume the role of a hero and fight alongside your friends as you try to accomplish a goal. I will note, this involves actual role play and cooperation. These are essential to run a good session. You simply play D&D through character interaction and combat. I will take on the role as dungeon master, and will act as storyteller and referee. I will guide you along through your first game. Unlike ObvDis, D&D gives a more organized structure to the story - allowing for actions to have reasonable consequences and results. Dice rolls are usually used to determine whether something occurs, such as attacking an enemy or doing an complicated action. Don't worry, for simplicity's sake, I will try to minimize the amount of dice rolls we have to take.
Remember, anything is possible, but don't go too far off - always remember to stay in character and not to break the rules of the game.
Part 3: So What are our Characters Going to Be?
PDF of Character Sheets
Again, for simplicity, I will be using the Starter Kit's pre-made characters. Please choose one - they are on a first come, first serve basis.
They are:
The PDFs of the character sheets should be in the link above. Please read over your character sheet and be familiar with their personality. motivations, and Skills (the numbers and check boxes to the left)
Part 4: What Do You Expect of Us?
Please indicate which character you are going to use.
Before our first session either on Monday or Tuesday, I expect you to:
They are:
- A High Elf Wizard (Chaotic Good)
- A Human Fighter (Lawful Good)
- A Hill Dwarf Cleric (Neutral Good)
- A Human Fighter (Lawful Neutral)
- A Lightfoot Halfling Rogue (Neutral)
The PDFs of the character sheets should be in the link above. Please read over your character sheet and be familiar with their personality. motivations, and Skills (the numbers and check boxes to the left)
Part 4: What Do You Expect of Us?
Please indicate which character you are going to use.
Before our first session either on Monday or Tuesday, I expect you to:
- Be familiar with your character - Understand your character, both statistic-wise and personality-wise. I expect you to roleplay the character, not yourself.
- Be familiar with your teammates - Your teammates are the most important part of this experience. Know who they are, for you must rely on them to survive and to succeed. This is not a one-hero job.
- Understand the Basic Rules - Skim through the basic rules of D&D in the basic rule guide (below). I don't need you to read the whole thing, but I suggest reading the introduction, at most. Otherwise, I also suggest reading Adventuring, Combat, Using Ability Scores, Personality and Background, and read up on your Class and Race. Again, those are not necessary, but it will cut down on explaining I have to do during session.
- Read the Introduction - This is the introduction that the module provides on the basics of how to play D&D and the introduction to the campaign. Do not read further than page 5, the rest contains information only for me
- Be Active on Discord - I will be running this on Discord, using the forums to record daily progress and upload any necessary files. I suggest you actively use the Discord to participate.
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business." You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
Your Teammates:
A High Elf Wizard: Asphoxia, Jean Valjean
A Human Fighter no.1: Treble Tech, Bunker Hill Bill
A Hill Dwarf Cleric: Mouser, Millard Filmore
A Human Fighter no.2: Planetbox. Fred Jones
A Lightfoot Halfling Rogue: Lenrap, Barkley Rose
Part 6: Kiptoke, Why Don't You Just Use Roll20?
...shut up.
