We brought this up on the Discord server, but apparently no one thought it was important enough for the forum sooo... There's more news on Pokemon Sun and Moon! It apparently takes place in the Alola region, which is based on Hawaii. The three starters have also been revealed, as well as the game's boxart! The grass starter is an owl thing names Rowlet, the fire starter is a cat thing named Litten, and the water started is a sea lion thing named Popplio. Images and stuff. |

I'm hoping to get a story that is vastly different from the last six games. I feel like the standard formula has gotten kind of old...

I can't really imagine what could change in the story without altering the formula as well, but let me take a crack at it.
Gyms instead of being right in town, have entire areas dedicated to reaching them, with the usual quirk of each gym and the trainers within being a part of that zone. Once you reach the gym itself you only need to fight the leader, but they'll be tough enough so as to necessitate fighting the trainers and wild pokemon outside to reach that level to take on. However, you don't need to fight them and can move into the next area without worry.
Beating gym leaders will be necessary to raise the level of trades and getting HM skills, but you can also rent out (weaker and unlevelling) guest pokemon like how the stadium games worked without a game pack. In addition you'll be able to do a no frilled full circuit of the map via boat rides, trains, planes etc, so at no point will you be unable to continue forward without beating certain gyms, but you'll be missing out on a lot in the process. It could be interesting to see if the leaders also got different battle sets depending on whom you fight first, so that facing the easiest leader could end up being incredibly difficult later on if you pass long enough.
From there perhaps change up the plot to be focused more on your partners being on their own quests and you help them along the way. It'd be fun if once in a while You were the one showing up unexpectedly to fight them, and not in that lousy pokedex battle way.

Well, I was referring more to the whole "beat gyms, beat evil team grunts a bunch too, fight team leader, beat stupid eighth gym that no one cares about afterwards, beat champion" thing, but that works too. I thought Black and White did a fairly good job of mixing up the formula.

Black and white was nice, wasn't aldus like the first guy who just looks at you and is all "You should go be a champion."? For the most part your only goal is to fill the dex up, or whatever story goal drags you into the legendary encounter or newest gimmick, like the egg thing in GSE or Megas more recently.
Hmm. You know what'd be the best and worst? What if the evil teams in thjs game actually stole your pokemon and tried to use them against you in a rematch if you lost?. Make it so the starters, max affections and legendaries resist it sure but that could be an interesting twist.
Actually just bring back Orre and have everyone stealing pokemon
