You are a mercenary and spy-for-hire who has just taken a new job. This is unlike anything else you've been asked to do before. Your employer is a mysterious figure who only speaks to you through phone calls from different numbers each time. They've taken great care to have their voice left unheard, so every call's terse briefing has been read by a different person. Your employer could be either one or none of them. Now, on to the case: You have been asked to infiltrate a convention held by the four major crimefighting groups in your century. The objective is simple; infiltrate each group individually, then gain the valuable intelligence necessary to shut down their vigilante work for good. Your job in only to gather this intel; your employer will put it to use. But before you commence betraying the organizations, you need a code name. What is your code name?

The name "Xandra" pops into your head. It sounds cool and mysterious, like a code name should, while still sounding like a name. At least it's not something silly like "Kage". I mean, really. People would be referring to you as "Ms. Cage" all the time and that would be just plain demeaning. Now, on to the organizations you must betray. As was mentioned before, there are four of them. You stare at the brief descriptions of them in the files in front of you. They are: Rhiannon Light Paranormal Investigations: A small and under-funded ghostbusting group with few members. They specialize in removing ghosts, demons, and other dark entities, but can be formidable fighters as well. They've never had any problems with traitors, and are largely trusting. Based in Great Britain. Time Knights: A mystical order specializing in time disturbances. Slightly bigger than Rhiannon Light, and with more powerful members. They can take out just about any non-magical threat, and many magical ones too, aside from the most powerful. They aren't too easy to hoodwink, but it can be done if you meet their rigid initiation criteria. Based in Italy, although members come from all over. Heroes Infinity: A large and slightly ragtag unit of crimefighters who specialize in finding threats and eliminating them by whatever means necessary, especially when innocents are under threat. They have great numbers, and four specialized divisions which focus on manpower, technology, raw magical energy, and spycraft. They also face the most red tape out of any of the organizations due to the fact they are basically a non-government sanctioned private fighting force for hire. Based in New York state, although members are known to come from all over the world, including the Outer Landmasses. (The outer landmasses are Aerth and The Arunan Republics. More on them later.) If they catch a traitor, they will not hesitate to take strict disciplinary action, so don't get caught. Magica Underground: Europe's magical spycraft organization, they are the most well-funded and dangerous to infiltrate. Since they're technically a magical branch of Interpol, betraying them and getting caught will result in legal action. If you are caught, your employer will sever all ties with you, leaving you to the law. The members of Magica Underground are the best of the best. They know how to deal with traitors, and it isn't pretty. Their specialty is anything that threatens the world as we know it. Unfortunately, they often end up playing second fiddle to the Heroes Infinity, as the latter never deals with paperwork and just flies in and neutralizes a threat. Has multiple bases all over Europe, Central Underground is in Paris.
You need to decide where to start. Which organization shall you infiltrate first? Choose carefully...

You decide to consider the pros and cons of starting with each organization. Man, you're full of good ideas today! Firstly, Rhiannon Light. Obviously it would be the easiest one to start with, since it's the smallest and least restrictive membership-wise. Plus, if Rhiannon Light were to suddenly leave the convention after compromising information had been leaked, nobody would suspect a thing. However, they don't have many secrets, so you'd have to dig deep to find anything really useful. The Time Knights are very restrictive on who they let in, but finding dirty secrets here is relatively easy- people tend to disappear in this organization. However, getting in would be a problem. In order to enter the organization, you'd need to either apply like everybody else or challenge a current Time Knight to a duel for their position, and that might raise awkward questions. Heroes Infinity will let in anybody, and there are many opportunities for newcomers. However, their information is closely guarded, and access to their databases are closely regulated. You'd need to do some hacking, which isn't one of your strong suits. Plus, getting found out would mean all sorts of nasty things happening- Infinity doesn't tolerate betrayal. Magica Underground is probably the worst choice. If you did get in, entry level jobs have little to no security clearance, so getting found in a restricted area would most definitely lead to getting fired. And if you get fired from Magica Underground, you're not getting re-hired. Infiltrating this agency will take time and lots of patience. One false move and you're out. Also, the disappearance of Magica Underground would put the entire convention on high alert- it's best to leave this baby until last, when you can make a quick getaway.
You've thought long and hard. Which organization will you start with?

Magica Underground because it's the least predictable and sounds like the most fun.

You decide to go with Magica Underground. It sounds challenging, fun, and may just get you killed. Now, you need to choose a branch to apply to. Only two have openings- the detection branch which is based in Munich, and the intelligence branch which is based in Stockholm. Which will you choose?

You decide to go with the detection branch. Somebody of your incredible skill at spying would stand out too much in the intelligence branch, especially since you have no resume with any government organizations devoted to spycraft. You head to your employer's airfield to catch a flight to Germany. Before you get on the plane, however, your cell phone rings. It's instructions from your employer. Today, their voice is deep and rough; it grates on your ears like sandpaper. "So you chose Magica Underground's detection branch, eh? Never took you for much of a thrill seeker. Guess ya learn things about people every day. Look, if you're gonna get anywhere, you gotta rise up in the ranks of the branch pretty fast. We've prepared a stunning resume for you; just the kind they look for in their top officers. Once you get to the top, request to be transferred to Central Underground. That's where all the real useful stuff is." He pauses for a moment. "Oh, and Xandra? You clearly have a bit of a cavalier streak. If you screw this up, you'll be facing years of government red tape. I..." He almost sounded worried. "Just be careful, y'hear?" With that almost sentimental finale, your employer hangs up. During the long flight, you review the resume you've been given. Your employer must have had somebody stuff all this in your briefcase while you weren't looking. It's pretty standard and introduces you as Xandra Mayhew, former CIA agent and skilled magic-user, or mage. <<All these organizations require powers of some kind, or prodigious skill with a weapon, right down to the mailroom in the Heroes Infinity.>> The documents you've been given also include letters of reference and accounts of your service to the CIA. Once you arrive in the Munich Airport, you see a gathering of a few Magica Underground agents from the branch loitering around at a cafe. You can tell they're Magica Underground because their accents are from all over the world and you recognize one of them from newscasts back home. You might get some useful intel if you stay and chat, but it would also be a good idea to go straight to the branch headquarters and get to work. Which will you choose?

Just go straight to HQ. We might look suspicious if we just introduce ourselves right away.

You decide to go straight to headquarters. Just walking up and asking questions would look downright suspicious. When you arrive at headquarters, you notice somebody talking to the woman at the front desk. It's one of the agents you saw loitering at the cafe, the one from the newscasts. How did he get back before you, anyway? You drop off your recruitment forms and resume, then sit down. However, you can't help hearing the agent's conversation... "You need to cancel the convention! If Commander Raius won't listen to me, maybe somebody else will see reason!" The lady at the desk sighs like this has happened a million times. "Isaac, it could have been just a dream. You thought Runa was going to die on the mission to Egypt because of your visions, but she's still alive. You've been wrong before." The agent pounds the desk in frustration. "But I'm not wrong this time! I know I'm not, Vica!" The woman he's shouting at, Vica, sighs again and turns back to her computer. "You need to pull yourself together, my friend. If this continues, everyone's going to start thinking you're crazy. And we're a frickin' magical spy agency. Most people's standard of crazy is all in a day's work around here." Isaac groans and storms over to where you're sitting, but not before tossing one last retort over his shoulder. "What's the use of being a damn clairvoyant if nobody listens when you do have a vision?!" He sits down next to you and stays there. Well, this is rather awkward. You glance over a few minutes later. He hasn't left. You turn your back, hoping he'll get the message and shove off. Nope. Still there. You look over at Vica, hoping she'll start reviewing the forms you submitted. No luck there. You look over at Isaac. He's STILL there. You have a shocking realization. There was something your employer forgot to mention about the detection branch. It's where they send agents who are just a little too... unpredictable for Central Underground's tastes. Bright, but unpredictable. You may just be sitting next to a bona fide crazy person. What will you do now?

You sit there for a moment and decide to consider what life is. So far, it seems to be the opposite of death. It's when your heart is beating, your lungs are taking in and expelling air, you're not all cold and stiff all over, and you forever have a sarcastic retort on the tip of your tongue. Life! Don't talk to me about life! Life is pain, anyone who says otherwise is selling something. You were once told by somebody (it may have been your mother) that life is like a box of chocolates- you never know what you're going to get. Blacker than a moonless night, hotter and more bitter than hell itself, that is life. You get bored of that philosophical nonsense and continue giving Isaac the cold shoulder. This is quite satisfying for you. Suddenly, Vica looks up from her work. "Xandra Mayhew?" You walk over to her desk, making sure to still give Isaac the coldest shoulder possible while doing so. Vica blows a gum bubble, then abruptly pops it. This habit disgusts you- that bubblegum has been in her MOUTH. Ew. "I've processed all your entry forms, kiddo. Welcome to the detection branch." She stand up, kicking her swivel chair aside as she does so. "Come on, I'll show to the commander's office so she can assign you to a veteran agent. That way, you'll learn how things are run here." She pops another gum bubble. "Normally, newbies start in the mailroom. But we made an exception for somebody with a resume such as yours. For your sake, I hope you don't disappoint." She takes you up to the office of the commander. You sit down to wait. So far, the detection branch involves a lot of that. You can hear arguing from inside the office, but you can't make out the words. Do you listen at the door or mind your own business and sit still?

Just stand in front of the door with a blank face. It'll show enthusiasm while possibly giving you some intel.

You decide to stand in front of the door with a blank face. It'll show the kind of worshipful enthusiasm bureaucratic organizations like Magica Underground live for. Inside, the argument is raging. You hear a clipped, British-accented voice you recognize from the newscasts- Aislynne Raius, Commander of Magica Underground's detection branch. "I'm not acting, August, and that's final." The other voice is a man's, and has a similar accent. "Isaac is a liability, Aislynne. I know you have a soft spot for him, but if that stunt five years ago gets out, then we're in trouble. And I'm not talking about the detection branch, Aislynne, I'm talking about the organization. If you don't get that menace out of the organization and sever all ties to him as quickly as possible, we're in for a lot of trouble." Aislynne sighs. "What happened five years ago will not get out, August. Unless you plan to tell the press yourself?" August gives one last-ditch attempt at convincing her before you hear him walking towards the door. "I won't tell them. But not everyone is so trustworthy." You step back from the door just as it opens and August stalks out. He throws you a quick glance. "What are you doing here?" You fix him with the blankest stare of your career. "Just waiting to see the commander, sir." He rolls his eyes, muttering something that sounds like "suck up" under his breath, and storms off. The office is open now, so you can see the Commander. Do you go in immediately or wait a while?

You wait a few moments, then enter. Commander Aislynne Raius is sitting with her back to you. "So you're the new hire. Good, we need some fresh blood around here. I really hate to throw you into this, but I have something I want you to investigate. There's been a recent... problem with our records system. The information in there is supposed to be private, but lately, anybody with Internet is able to get right in and look up whatever they want about the organization. Isaac Llywelyn is originally on the detail to do this, but he's been a little... unstable lately. I'm assigning you to him for both of your sakes. Try to keep him out of trouble. Agent Mayhew, you are dismissed." You leave the office, simultaneously celebrating your good luck and cursing your misfortune. On the up side, you had perfect access to all sorts of information. On the other hand, you had to put up with crazy Isaac Llywelyn to do it. All the same, having him around might give you somebody to frame when it was over. You've been assigned and you now have a direct way into the records. What do you do?

You decide to go try to find Isaac so you can get into the mainframe and complete your mission. You're just congratulating yourself when suddenly... "Traitor." You stop. Did somebody say something? Looking around the hall, you realize that there's nobody else around. That could only mean one thing: this voice is being transmitted directly into your mind. "You're a dirty traitor. We know you're coming for Magica Underground. We know that next you will move on to another organization. And we will stop you. You cannot trace us with your technology. We cannot be found. But we are here. And we will not let you destroy this organization." With that, the voice is gone, leaving you with feelings of uneasiness. You stand there looking shocked for a while. You've always had knowledge of mages and their ways, but actual invasion of the mind is new to you. Only one kind of mage can do that- a Spirit mage. Spirit users tended to have great powers involving the mind, which included being psychic, telekinesis, and telepathy. And the only mage in the organization who fit the bill for that magical element was- "Mayhew!" Isaac Llywelyn. This mysterious mage who might be crazy (and also might incidentally be Welsh, although you don't see that as important) could have been the voice in your head. If he knew that you were a traitor paid to infiltrate Magica Underground, he would most certainly tell Commander Raius and then it would be curtains for you. "We're working together on investigating the mainframe. Come on." You don't respond. "Mayhew?" He waves a hand in front of your face. "Are you alright?" What do you do?

You kinda doubt that he's the most trustworthy person right now in the organization, but you'll have to come back later to be safe. Remember any info you come across trying to fix this leak but don't install the backdoor...yet.
