Kinniekins charges at the Footsoldier and tears at the exposed wires. The Footsoldier takes 5 damage. The Footsoldier falls to one knee. There is a screeching noise, like metal grinding against metal. Sparks fly as it struggles to stand back up. The Scrivener Footsoldier used Failed System Reboot! It regains 10 health, and will explode in 3 turns if not shut down first. Allies:Ackerman: Health 50/60, Ink 8/10

Through a combination of fisticuffs, shotput skills, and assault with camping supplies, you shut down the Footsoldier.
You are left in the center of the camp with a broken, battered robot on the ground.
Steele turns to you. "I'm glad that one was damaged. If we met one in good condition, it would be much tougher. The forest is just a little further ahead, but we can stop and rest here if you want."
What will you do? (Scrivener robots, like all enemies, can be searched.)

June 15th, 2014Feel guilty about your actions. Scraggy feels guilty about his actions. As for our heroes, they decide to search the Footsoldier. You find 20 spexen. You also gain a scrivener power core and two metal cogs. You stop and rest for the night. All of your party's health and MP are restored. (You can rest at any time in the wilderness, but there is a chance that you will be attacked by enemies. Places like inns are safe to stop in.) You wake up the next morning and continue on the path. Soon, you see the forest in the distance. The trees grow close together, blocking out much of the sunlight. At the edge of the forest, the path splits in two directions. There does not seem to be any difference between the two new paths, and you have no idea where either one leads. Will you go left or right?

Two votes for right. One for left. One for the middle. And then Asphoxia.
You take the path to the right. After walking for a while, you see a building in the distance. It is an old, run-down shack. There are many vines and plants growing up the walls, and a shovel leaning next against the front wall. There is a very basic wooden door. It looks abandoned until you realize there is smoke coming out of the chimney. The path leads towards the front door.
Will you investigate or leave it alone?

You decide to investigate the cabin, but you take the shovel before you go inside.
You walk through the door into a cluttered room. There are numerous books, all of which seem to be about gardening or plants. There are bags of dirt and mulch, and many gardening tools. There is a single armchair in front of a fireplace, which is lit. You stop as soon as you enter the room. There is an old man wearing a very dirty robe sitting in the chair. In one corner of the room are stairs leading upwards.
What will you do?

You decide to head upstairs, but as you walk towards the stairs, you knock over one of the bags of dirt. You freeze, and glance at the man. He has tilted his head towards you, but doesn't do anything else. You continue on your way.
The stairs wind upwards to the second floor. You come out into a short hallway with three doors. One is at the end of the hallway, and there is one in each of the other walls. The floor is covered with a thick layer of dust, which Kinniekins sniffs at before climbing up onto your shoulder. She must have smelled something she didn't like.
What will you do next?

July 5th, 2014 – Planet’s Fake Update!
*dons Treble Tech mask* "Lets do this! In traditional Planetbox style!"
You begin walking down the hall. Suddenly you hear a whistling sound, and you hear a grunt of pain. You turn just in time to see Steele collapse to the floor, an arrow sticking right through his heart. Down the hall the old man is back, holding a bow. "Pitiful human! Be glad he died honorably! You should be thankful that you will die here, in the thrill of battle! I am a member of the Sontaro tribe, a group of nameless warriors who love nothing more than war! You die here!" The Sontaro warrior knocks an arrow and aims at Kinniekins. Kinniekins yelps and runs down the hall, the arrow thunking into the ground behind her. She runs under the warrior's legs and escapes down the stairs. "Stupid fox. I'll kill her later! Now to you!" He pulls out a sword, and charges toward you. You quickly grab your whip and hook it on to his blade, disarming him. You grab a nearby painting and write Wyldpilas on it. A stream of fire charges down the hall, but the warrior leaps over it. He soars through the air and lands behind you, already having a knife in his hand. "Relax friend! We always meet our matches at some point! What's the point of battle without the risk of dying!" You immediately feel a searing paint in your chest as the dagger plunges into your flesh. You collapse to the ground, but manage to cling to life long enough to hear the Sontaro Warrior say "I hope to face you on the fields of battle in the next life!" His clamorous laugh is the last thing you hear.

July 5th, 2014 – ACTUAL Update
If they're a group of nameless warriors, how can the tribe have a name?
Anyway, you decide to examine the dust on the ground while Steele checks through each door. You notice that among the usual dirt and grit of time, there are what look like small petals laid out in some kind of pattern. You pick one up. It is bright green, with a yellow sunburst in the center, and very jagged edges. Curious, you decide to try something. You write wyldpilas on a piece of paper and point the flames towards the petals, which turn out to be very flammable. The fire follows the trail of petals and spells out a new word: "atureed".
Steele comes back through the last door and sees this cheery blaze in the middle of the hallway. "Are you out of your mind!?!? Lighting a fire indoors? You'll burn this whole house down!" He stomps at the fire to put it out. "Anyway, the door on the right leads to a storeroom, with more fertilizer and tools. The one on the left is a bedroom, very plain, hardly anything inside. The one straight ahead leads to what looks like a greenhouse. I didn't actually go inside because, well, the plants didn't seem happy to see me. Let's leave it at that."
What will you do now?

You decide to try out the word. You write "atureed" down, using two units of ink. The paper flashes green, and then hundreds of tiny petals explode out of it. The petals which were left on the ground begin to grow, becoming brighter, and beginning to reform plants. Then, you hear a roar.
The door to the greenhouse is smashed open and flies into a corner. Three huge vines whip out from the doorway, grabbing the three of you and pulling you inside the greenhouse. You are dragged through dense greenery and down some steps, into the deepest part of the greenhouse, where there is a huge clearing. You have just enough time to catch a glimpse of a huge venus flytrap, still shining green and growing larger every second. The vines lift you up towards the thing's mouth. If you don't act fast, you'll be more fertilizer for the garden.
You write wyldpilas on the vine, using two units of ink, and the plant's stalk bursts into flame. Luckily, the vines drop you before the fire spreads to them. You land on the ground, and watch the plant curl up into a charred piece of earth. Your party begins to catch their breath.
Suddenly, something slams into you from behind, sending you flying across the clearing. You hit a tree and slide to the ground. You see that the same has happened to Steele, and Kinniekins is biting at more small vines twining around her legs. Standing in the entrance to the greenhouse is the old man. He is holding a rough wooden staff with an emerald embedded into the top. There is a thick vine wrapped around his eyes which seems to be connected to the back of his head, covered by thick white hair. Then he starts to speak. "So, you have come to burn down my forest? You have already killed one of my pets. I cannot allow you to leave here and continue your devastation. Do you have any final words?"
Kinniekins bites through the vine and runs towards you. Steele walks up beside you. "What do you want to do? I don't know who this is, so I have no idea how this could turn out."

Also, complain that your "pets" tried to kill us before we even entered the greenhouse! He laughs. "They're tiny plants. What could they have done to you? Some of them don't like strangers, that's all." You charge across the clearing and try to shovel him in the face, but a thick cocoon of vines shields him. He then blows you back towards Steele and Kinniekins. "So you want to fight me? Alright. Maybe you'll actually last for a few minutes, but you'll die by the hand of Arbor in the end." His staff glows, and the ground bursts open near him. Three humanoid creatures with tree bark for skin crawl out and charge towards you, while the old man walks behind them. Try an Atureed + Wyldpilas combo. Most people seem to be going with this. You use the last of your ink to write down the words. Green and red energy shoots toward the golems, who begin to glow. There is a creaking, groaning sound, and each one begins to grow larger, almost doubling in height as a manic look comes into their eyes. Then they burst into flame. Arbor looks towards you, stunned for a minute. "Scrivener..." he mumbles. Then, one of his own golems grabs him and tosses him into the air. He rights himself in midair and floats down beside you. "You can use Vocables? We need to talk after we fix the mess you've made." Steele gives you a sharp glare. "I don't care what special bloodline you're from, maybe you should stop flinging words around if you don't know what they're going to do. Some problems are better solved at the end of a sharp blade." The golems roar and charge towards you. Allies:Ackerman: Health 60/60, Ink 0/10

Against your better judgement, you decide to listen to the mysterious voices in your head and attempt to escape from the tree golems. Summoning up all of your courage and athletic ability, you make a break for the entrance to the greenhouse. Which is on the other side of the golems from you. You charge across the clearing, wailing like a banshee. As soon as you reach the golems, you are smacked in the chest and sent flying back to where you started, flopping around like an especially adventurous sack of potatoes. You land in a heap on the ground, and take 30 damage. Kinniekins growls at you, and Steele just shakes his head. Arbor gives you a strange look. "Out of all the people who could have had Scrivener blood, it had to be someone with a death wish." Arbor casts Forest's Blessing, which heals you completely and uses 10 mana. The tree golems have now reached you. One swings at you with a flaming arm, but it misses. The other two try to hit Arbor and Steele, but both of them miss as well. All three take five damage from the fire. You are too dazed this round to do anything. Kinniekins attempts to attack one, but is repelled by the tough bark. Steele slices one for 15 damage. Arbor casts Rampant Growth for 15 mana, which boosts your entire party's attack. Allies:Ackerman: Health 60/60, Ink 0/10 Empowered (+ damage)

Suddenly, your head explodes with voices, which all seem to be ordering you around. Some are arguing with each other, or repeating words over and over again. Two seem to be singing, and one is telling you to dance for some unknown reason. Despite the choir of speech inside your head, you manage to whip one golem for 18 damage. Steele slices another for 20 damage, and Kinniekins manages to bite a weak spot on the one you attacked, dealing a further 9 damage. Arbor casts Nature's Wrath, blasting the last tree golem for 30 damage and using 20 mana. The golems attack again. Two of them miss, but the third hits Arbor, dealing 37 damage to him. You prick your finger and write wyldpilas on your paper. Congratulations! You now have red-stained paper. Apparently words only work with ink from your bottle. You, Steele, and Kinniekins all focus your attacks on the weakest golem, dealing a combined 57 damage and destroying it. Arbor casts Firecracker Lily for 25 mana, and a small vine twists its way up the second golem. It stops in front of the golem's face and sprouts a flower, which shoots explosive seeds, dealing 30 damage. Two of the golems miss, but one hits Steele, causing 32 damage. You dodge around the golems, not only landing your own hits, but tricking them into hitting each other when they miss you. Your party does 19 damage to one and 7 to the other, and the first is finished off by the second golem. Arbor then blasts the second with magic for 20 damage, and it takes five damage from fire. Allies:Ackerman: Health 60/60, Ink 0/10 Empowered (+ damage)
Kinniekins: Health 40/40 Empowered (+ damage)
Steele: Health 23/55, Mana 15/15 Empowered (+ damage)
Arbor, Forest Mage: Health 163/200, Mana 70/160 Empowered (+ damage) Enemies:

Long story short, you kill the last golem. Arbor turns to you. "So, you can use Vocables. That must mean you are related to the Scriveners of long ago. I am the guardian of this forest. Every living thing here is under my protection. Why are you here?" Steele speaks up. "He promised to help me. I heard there was a spell that could heal me. I'm not quite normal." "Ah, yes I've heard the legends. You're looking for the old mill. There used to be a powerful sorcerer who lived there. Lovely fellow, but all the aardvarks got to be a bit too much to handle. Heard due north from here and you should find it soon enough." Arbor then turns back to you. "Be careful. Things are changing in our world. Ancient wounds have been reopened, and the Scriveners are at the center, despite their disappearance. If there is anything you wish to ask before you leave, be my guest." Do you have questions, or will you continue onwards?

"A better word for vocables would be 'discovered'. All words have power, but ways to harness that power have only been found for some of them. And I'm afraid I don't have any more to share with you. As for ink, I don't have any. I'm a sorcerer, not an author! That's you."
"The only books I have are spell tomes, and I'm not a bank. However, this rock fell on me. You can look at it if you want."
It is the message you sent! "Yes there is. In the future" has been added to it.
You ask him if he knows where it came from. He looks at you like you're an idiot. "Where do you think? The future. And yes, I do know of time travel. However, it is not my area of expertise. I specialize in plants and forest magic. Besides, sending a living being through time is much more difficult than sending an inanimate object. I don't know of anyone who has ever successfully done it."

You ask if there is anyone at all who might have information.
"Well, there's a young sapling near the center of this forest named Elden. Cheeky little thing, but the trees have much knowledge unknown to me. He might be able to help you, assuming you can get him to talk to you."
You thank Arbor start to leave, but he stops you. "I couldn't help noticing that you seem to be close to your little fox there." He points at Kinniekins. "I want you to have this." He pulls out four small gloves that seem to be made for a fox's paws and puts them on her. "The Scriveners used to keep enchanted animals as pets. Your fox has already been exposed to magic, so she should be able to use these Relics. There are more scattered around the world, so be sure to keep your eyes open."
Kinniekins now has the Razor Gloves. Her attacks are stronger and have a chance to cause bleeding when attacking some enemies.
You leave the cottage, and Steele turns to you. "Do you want to try to find Elden or my spellbook first? I think they're both deeper in the forest."

You head into the woods along an old, partially overgrown path, searching for Elden. The sun starts to go down, and the shadows lengthen. You can hear scuffling noises from the trees around you, from creatures running through the branches. Off the path, you notice a pit, like a hunting trap. There is no cover on the top, which means something must have fallen in.
Will you investigate it or continue on your way?

Investigate wins.
You walk over to the pit. You can see the remains of a covering around the sides, and hear grumbling from the bottom. You cautiously sneak to the edge and look inside, seeing a very familiar face.
Gripnork's eyes bulge out of his head when he sees you. "Human! You made this trap, didn't you? You captured the uncapturable Gripnork! I have your head for this soon! Now get me out!"
He is sitting at the bottom of the pit. Even if he could reach you, he seems injured and in no condition to fight. You might be able to help him, or you could leave him here. Your choice.

You decide to help Gripnork. You toss down a rope, and help him climb out of the pit. Then you push him back in.
He lands with a thud at the bottom of the pit and begins ranting, yelling at quite an impressive volume. "Filthy human! Gripnork was supposed betray you first! I hunt you down and feed you to dirgelings, paleface! No human escape wrath of Gripnork!"
You stop paying attention to the goblin when Steele taps your shoulder. "Look, I don't like goblins any more than you do, but now we have a problem. He's screeching loud enough to wake the dead, and they don't take kindly to disturbances. Trust me, I know. There are things in this forest I don't want to meet, and all this racket might bring them straight to us. Maybe we should get off the path so that we have some cover. It might be slower, but also safer."
Will you continue along the path, or head into the forest, just in case?

And That’s Everything!
We are now up to the point where this was left on bitforums. So, for the first time in over a year… a new update!!! (Also, the first update since I took an actual creative writing class :3)
Rather than risking getting lost in the forest, you make the decisions to continue along the path. Steele simply grunts in assent, but makes no argument as you begin to walk, with Kinniekins padding behind you.
Your party walks for what seems like hours, taking care to follow every minute twist and turn of the path, which is choked out by increasing numbers of weeds the deeper into the forest you travel. Travel is deathly silent, with every attempt at conversation choked out by the trees pressing in against you.
The sun goes down too soon, giving way to a cloudy moon. Night is heralded by scores of unearthly green wisps rising from the ground, painting eerie shadows on the surrounding forest.
Suddenly, you hear a voice, one so soft and fluid that it could be mistaken for wind. “I feel you, child. Your legs are weary and your eyes dull. Come and rest, and I can protect you for the night.” Numerous wisps swirl in a blinding dance in front of you before they sweep to the side, forming glowing beacons into the darkness. Away from the trail.
What will you do now? You could stick with the trail or follow the wisps. Or maybe try asking the voice something?
(Status update since this hasn’t been active in forever. Your party are all in good health, but you are out of ink at the moment. You were traveling to a mil in the forest to look for a book to help Steele remove his helmet. You were also informed by Arbor that an ancient tree named Elden lives in the forest who may be able to help with your quest.)

Is it ever a good time to follow mysterious wisps into the woods? Especially when you're out of ink? Eh, whatever. Let's just ask the voice where they intend to lead you.

Ask the voice if it knows anything about your objectives. Ask for all the info before you take a step off the trail and then unlock an achievement. ...what? We can't all be serious.
